BIONIC PROJECT OVERVIEW
BIONIC is a major new project that will address the issues of biofuel supply and use in transport specifically from the perspective of Local Authorities and will promote developments in the regional production and use of transport biofuels.

The project is part funded under the European Commissions' Intelligent Energy Europe programme and will run for three years.

BIONIC aims to provide an overview of biofuels opportunities and user needs in partner communities and will establish regional biofuels networks to run during and after the end of the project.

BIOFUELS
Biofuels are widely acknowledged as being an essential part of any future sustainable transport system.A range of barriers exist which hinder the successful introduction of biofuels in the transport sector. BIONIC will address these barriers specifically from the perspective of local or regional public authorities.

PARTICIPATING REGIONS
BIONIC will set up regional actions in five participating regions aimed at promoting developments in the regional production and use of transport biofuels. The regions involved are:

  • North West England (UK)
  • Cantabria (E)
  • Varmland (SE)
  • Prahova (RO)
  • Pazardjik (BG)

Biofuels are widely acknowledged as being an integral part of any future sustainable transport system. A range of barriers exist which hinder the successful introduction of biofuels in the transport sector:

  • Fuel production capacity and availability
  • Availability of higher blends to recognised specifications
  • Vehicle technology compatibility
  • Supply network availability and organisation
  • Production cost and associated fiscal (taxation) regimes
  • Availability of reliable information and purchasing opportunities to both fleet managers and the wider population.

Local and regional public authorities have a role to play in overcoming these barriers which BIONIC will explore and develop.

BIONIC PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The objective of BIONIC is to establish a series of regional networks, led by Local Authorities and involving stakeholders at all stages of the supply and end-use chain, aimed at increasing the take-up of biofuels in the transport sector.
