Pazardjik district (see image below) is situated in the central part of Southern Bulgaria over an area of 4458.0 km2 constituting 4% of the total territory of the country. According to the districts population number (321062 people) the district region ranks 8 amongst the other regions.
The region's center Pazardjik is 100 km away from the capital city Sofia and 37 km away from the second largest Bulgarian city Plovdiv.

Profile of Regional Energy Agency of Pazardjik
The Regional Energy Agency of Pazardjik (REAP) has been legally established in June 2005 as a nonprofit association under the statutes of Bulgarian Law, and confirmed with the autonomy requirement of Intelligent Energy - Europe (IEE) guidelines. The main purpose of REAP is to encourage the development of sustainable energy through local and regional actions for energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. REAP is an association of 11 municipalities and offers support to local authorities in achieving their objectives and strategic planning for renewable energies, as well as development of a range of initiatives with other local, regional and foreign organizations. Among main priorities of REAP are: EE and RES projects identification and development, energy efficiency in buildings, development of sustainable energy communities, EE and RES in SMEs. A specific priority of REAP is the biomass use for energy purposes, defined by the big agricultural and forestry potential in the Pazardjik region. REAP is an active member of the Association of Bulgarian Energy Agencies (ABEA)

List of Most Relevant Projects
REAP is and has been involved in the following projects at European level:

MALAGA (IEE, DG TREN): REAP was a partner in this project that set up energy agencies in Malaga, Massa Carrara and Pazardjik;

ASTWOOD (IEE, DG TREN): This project develops a strategy for the sustainable use of wood and its implementation as base for legislative measures on regional level;

SEC Tools (IEE, DG TREN): Energy Service Communities in new member states that looked at sustainable energy development at local level-energy planning and financing-SEC tools.

EnergyBells (FP6, DG Research): REAP acted as project coordinator of this project that looked at a sustainable and integrated community energy management scheme for energy retrofitting with renewable energy sources supply of buildings in Municipality of Belovo, Bulgaria;

Interaction (IEE, DG TREN): energy efficiency in the area of freight transport through engaging sectoral organisations as champions and messengers in order to reduce energy use in freight transport;
