ENGLAND'S NORTH WEST
The North West of England includes largely rural areas in the North and two large conurbations centred around Liverpool and Manchester in the South. The area covers more than 14,000 km2 and includes England 's highest peak. Lancashire County Council and Merseytravel are the UK partners in BIONIC. Merseytravel is comprised of two separate statutory bodies, the Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority (MPTA) and Executive (MPTE) acting together with the overall aim to provide a single integrated transport network that is accessible to all and which improves the quality of life on Merseyside. Policy responsibility rests with 18 councillors drawn from Merseyside's 5 districts who serve on the MPTA. The MPTE implements the policies of the MPTA and is made up of directors and officers committed to developing and integrating public transport on Merseyside. Merseytravel co-ordinates and procures major elements of the public transport system and acts in partnership with private bus and rail operators to provide public transport in Merseyside.
